Join the Think Outside the Bomb Network http://www.thinkoutsidethebomb.org for four days of learning, sharing, and activism, from August 14-17 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA. The conference will bring together young nuclear abolitionists, peace and justice activists, ecologists, and other advocates for a just and livable planet to learn about the threat of nuclear weapons, the destruction caused by the nuclear fuel chain, the environmental and human health effects, and current political opportunities to move toward nuclear disarmament and abolition. *To apply, please visit http://thinkoutsidethebomb.org
“Think Outside the Bomb” is fully organized and led by youth (roughly defined as the under-30 crowd), and it strives to do more than just educate young people about the issues surrounding nuclear weapons, power, and waste — it also sustains an active network of organizers that places us in the forefront of the movement to make change happen. Like previous conferences, this year’s “Think Outside the Bomb” will provide transportation to and from the conference, as well as help with housing, and several meals for all participants, as part of our commitment to making this empowering experience accessible to all.
The 2008 National Conference in Cambridge, MA, will explore such interconnected themes as building localized opposition to militarism and empire, supporting indigenous and anti-racist resistance to nuclear colonialism, and turning back the resurgence of “poisoned power” (nuclear energy) especially in relationship to the growing climate crisis. It will include workshops, panels, dialogs, and skills trainings to strengthen our analysis of the role of nuclear weapons in the global political order, to equip us with new tools for effective advocacy and community organizing, and to deepen our shared commitment to building a better world.
Speakers for this conference include Arjun Makhijani of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, Zia Mian from Princeton University, Joseph Gerson, author of /Empire and the Bomb/, Subrata Ghoshroy from MIT, Jackie Cabasso of the Western States Legal Foundation, and of course, several youth activists representing various nuclear abolition organizations and environmental justice communities from across the country.
