Sudan Liberation leader to speak in Portland

Abdul Wahid Mohammed Nur, the head of the Sudan Liberation Movement, one of the two largest rebel groups in Darfur, will speak in Portland, Maine on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Root Cellar, 94 Washington Avenue. Abdul Walid will speak about the current situation in Darfur and the state of the movement for peace and justice in one of Africa’s most repressive regimes. An estimated 300,000 people have lost their lives in the conflict through murder, starvation, malnutrition and disease. Genocide against the indigenous Black African Muslim population is being committed by the supporters of the primarily Arab Muslim government. The current sitting president of the country, Omar al-Bashir is facing charges of being an accomplice in ethnic cleansing of the largely Fur, Masaleit and Zagawa tribes of Darfur.
