Maria Holt Awarded Honorary Membership in Maine Veterans for Peace
On June 24th, in Brunswick, at the Maine Veterans for Peace monthly
gathering, Maria Holt was named an honorary member of MVP, only the second
time in the nearly 20-year history of VFP that an individual has been so
honored.
During her years in the state legislature and as a private-sector citizen,
Maria Holt has been without peer in her tireless commitment to peace
activism, to a more sustainable environment, to a broad range of issues
crucial if we are ever to attain the goal of a safer, more just, more
peaceful world.
A key player in the successful drive to close Maine Yankee, Maria remains
involved in the monitoring of radioactive emissions emanating from the
nuclear plant. And, through the decades, she has been a familiar face at
Bath Iron Works vigils, joining others in urging BIW to convert from Aegis
death ships to building vessels for peaceful purposes.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Maria urged all present to keep their
eyes on the prize, to stay involved, to write letters to newspapers and to
their congressional representatives, and, moreover, to support those in the
legislature who have in common the goals shared by Veterans for Peace, Peace
Action Maine and other such groups.
