I strongly urge President Bush to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki to walk through that forest and ride that river. I beg him to encounter this human legacy and confirm with his own eyes what nuclear weapons hold in store for us all.

The United States government has no right to force Pax Americana on the rest of us, or to unilaterally determine the fate of the world. On the contrary, we, the people of the world, have the right to demand "no annihilation without representation."

— Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba

To the Editor:

Peace Action Maine is the only Peace Action affiliate that incorporates diversity networking as part of its overall organizing strategy. Today, Peace Action Maine continues to lead by becoming one of the founding members of a new coalition, the Sunrise Alliance: A New Voice for Maine.

The Sunrise Alliance is a nonpartisan, statewide coalition whose mission is to educate and empower Maine citizens to become active participants in developing a just and sustainable future. We will harness the power of mainstream media as a crucial means towards our mission of education, citizen involvement, and volunteerism.

Beginning this fall, we will launch a sustained, statewide, multimedia advertising campaign dedicated to promoting a progressive voice through the mainstream media, boosting membership in constituent organizations, and coalescing the shared concerns and values of everyday Mainers into a coherent vision of a just and sustainable future. The campaign will tackle specific issues in turn "universal healthcare, alternative energy, nuclear disarmament, and many more" and link them to a common agenda. As the coalition grows, the Alliance will address new issues.

The primary strategies Sunrise Alliance will use are radio, print ads and underwriting. We believe the issues of economic, social and political justice, peace, nonviolence, and environmental sustainability are not currently being addressed in today's media. This effort represents a crucial mechanism by which to strengthen the collaboration of progressive organizations in Maine. The Sunrise Alliance will serve to identify constituents who share these values, direct them to membership organizations, and help drive a common agenda for progressive action in Maine. As Sunrise continues, we will expand the number of issues being promoted, again increasing citizen participation and volunteerism.

To help fund Peace Action Maine's radio and print ads, or support the work of the Sunrise Alliance, visit our website, www.sunrisealliance.org, or mail contributions to P.O. Box 3071, Portland 04104.
