New England Witness for Peace Focuses on Cuba This Fall
Maine Witness for Peace is sponsoring the ever-popular film, "Buena Vista
Social Club" on Sunday, September 16 at 5 p.m., at The Movies on Exchange
Street in Portland as the first half of a fund-raiser. The second half is
dinner at Mesa Verde, 618 Congress Street. Cost of both is $35.00, or $10
for the film, $25 for a wonderful meal cooked by that ever-generous chef and
proprietor, Sr. Marco Ramirez.
WFP's annual speaker's tour of New England this year features Sr. Joel
Suarez Rodes, the General Coordinator of the Martin Luther King Center in
Havana, a comfortable retreat and convention center where many a college
student ,church member and Witness group have stayed.
Suarez will be in Maine from October 1-4. Portland area people may hear him
on October 3rd at the University of New England in Biddeford and the USM
Gorham and Portland campuses.
Various radio broadcasts are also planned. For exact times and locations,
call Don/Anna Sibley at 892-7446.
Suarez knows the beauty, culture and pain of his country from the inside
out. As a leader in the Cuban ecumenical movement, he is well suited to
reveal the emerging role of religious institutions in Cuba, as well as
Cuba's historical relationship to social movements in other countries.
Witness for Peace will also have a booth at the Common Ground Fair from
September 21-23. See you there!
