Potluck and Video Showing at Addams-Melman House

Jul 26 2007 - 6:00pm

We are the Addams-Melman House would like to invite you all to our house for a pot luck and video showing on Thursday, July 26 at 6:00 pm.

The video is a Japanese documentary about resistance to U.S. bases in South Korea and Okinawa. It is a very moving video that MB purchased while we were in Atlanta at the U.S. Social Forum. Following the video we both will also share some of our reflections on the Social Forum.

The video is particularly moving about the non-violent resistance in Okinawa where a U.S. Marine base is extending the runway out into the ocean and will likely destroy a pristine coral reef and fishing area. The film shows activists going out into the ocean on kayaks and occupying scaffolding that has been erected to take ocean floor samples before the runway construction begins. There is extraordinary footage of these folks hanging onto the scaffolding as the construction people try to throw them into the ocean.

The South Korean story is equally as moving as they show actual video of the U.S. military bombing a small island off the coast and the eventual successful efforts by the locals to close the bombing range.

Please let us know if you plan to come.
