Maine's Occupation Project

The Occupation Project is a campaign of sustained nonviolent civil disobedience to end the Iraq War. Beginning February 5, 2007-the anniversary of Colin Powell’s infamous 2003 speech to the U.N. justifying the U.S. invasion of Iraq-activists around the U.S. will engage in nonviolent civil disobedience at the offices of Representatives and Senators who do not publicly pledge to vote against additional war funding.

The Occupation Project has four essential components:

1) A demand that Representatives and Senators publicly pledge to vote against any additional funds for the Iraq war and occupation.

2) Civil disobedience at the offices of Representatives and Senators who refuse to make such a public pledge.

3) Local organizers will determine the type of civil disobedience and the frequency (e.g., once a week or every other week).

4) Commitment to nonviolence in all aspects of the Occupation Project campaign.

With the recent election results in, now is the time to increase pressure upon Representatives and Senators to vote to end all war funding. Resolutions supporting “phased withdrawals” are not enough. The war and occupation will end only when funding for the war ends.
