PAM gears up to get out the vote.
by Greg Field, PAM Executive Director
Peace Action Maine is already hard at work registering voters across the
state in coalition with organizations and merchants including the Portland
chapter of the NAACP and Longfellow Books. At events such as a recent forum
at SPACE Gallery in Portland, a core of members and friends register people
and make them aware of how much their voices and votes can matter.
By working together with other groups we can coordinate rather than
duplicate efforts. PAM volunteer Beth Streeter is helping to plan PAM-led
activities that will include tabling at selected grocery stores in areas
where registration efforts are needed. Streeter welcomes more volunteers,
and encourages anyone who wants to help in any way to contact her through
the PAM office at 772-0680.
Registration and voter mobilization matter, but PAM is also beginning its
Peace Voter 2004 campaign. With Meredith Sabella coordinating this project,
PAM will develop voter guides and other efforts for highlighting issues of
war & peace, budget priorities, and the countryıs need for a new direction
in its foreign policy.
Sabella will serve as an intern with PAM through the summer. She will help
develop the questionnaires given to the Maine Congressional candidates,
prepare the voter guide, and coordinate the network of activists around
Maine who will help distribute guides. Contact her through our office.
All of our voter registration and educational activities are non-partisan.
PAM does not endorse candidates. Instead it seeks to mobilize voters by
educating them about their voting rights and informing them about the
positions and views of their candidates. Holding elected officials and
candidates accountable is an important step to a just and peaceful world.
