TOM NEILSON, the “Jon Stewart of folk music” who is doing a benefit performance so we can send a bus filled with humanitarian supplies to Cuba. A small bus will leave Portland on June 14 to break the cruel, illegal U.S. blockade against the island nation. Tom Neilson has performed in concert halls and clubs, at political protests, and on picket lines.

We must keep speaking out against the “Emergency Supplemental Bill” that will fund the Iraq occupation into 2009 ($172 billion more). Congress will be voting on the Bill this week.
We’re keeping the pressure on. We sat in Sen. Susan Collins’ office last Thursday in Portland from noon until 5:30 a.m. and we’re going back this Wednesday, May 14th.

Portland, ME—The art exhibit “Maybe He’s a Metaphor” will open at the Meg Perry Center (644 Congress St, Portland) at 5pm on May 2, 2008. “Maybe He’s a Metaphor” celebrates the life and art of Adam Sanders (4/24/88-12/30/07), a young activist who worked closely with Peace Action Maine, Physicians for Social Responsibility, The League of Young Voters and Equality Maine. The exhibit features Sanders’ poetry, oil paintings, photography and pastel as well as artwork created in his memory by family and friends. It will be on display throughout the month of May.

Baker is a teacher, an actor, a former member of the Maine legislature, a union activist, and democratic socialist leader. “Jimmy Higgins” has long stood for the name of the rank-and-file union and socialist activist.

Amnesty International USA is touring an exact replica of a Guantanamo Bay prison cell, in support of AIUSA’s “Denounce Torture” Campaign. The 1,650-pound cell is stopping in Portland and will be on display at Monument Square June 5-7.

For the Maine bus joining the Pastors for Peace Friendshipment Caravan in McAllen, Texas. From there trucks & buses filled with humanitarian supplies head for Cuba by way of Tampico, Mexico. They go in spite of U.S. rules on the Cuban embargo.
