More than a decade ago, refugees from Southern Sudan came together in Portland to form ASERELA, which means Action for Self Reliance. With your help and that of many others, they held fund raising events, such as the Feast for the Children, and sent money to their family and friends who were in the Kiryondongo refugee camp in Uganda. Through hard labor, the bricks became a school, the first permanent structure in the camp.
Originally the school provided class rooms and a hot meal for the kindergartners, but soon the school had to be expanded as the parents
On April 7th, PAM’s Action Committe will be joined by Andrea Licata, an Italian activist and scholar who has been organizing against the expansion of the US military base in the Dal Molin suburb of Vicenza.
All are invited to join us for a potluck and conversation, beginning at 5:30pm, about international solidarity, economic conversion and this exciting movement to curb U.S. militarism abroad! Andrea will be offering a formal presentation about his work at 7pm.

This forum hopes to engage the link between peace and environmental issues and provide a space for student peace and environmental activists to gather, network and explore possibilities for greater collaboration, specifically within the upcoming academic year. The forum will be held in Jewett Hall at the University of Maine - Augusta.

As a young girl of four, Mariam and her family fled Afghanistan when it was invaded by the former Soviet Union. Living for a time in Pakistan before immigrating to the United States, Mariam was inspired by her uncle’s work as a physician and organizer of services to fellow refugees.
