Door Canvass Is Put to Bed for the Winter
by Rosalie Tyler Paul
David Demere has just completed leadership of Peace Action Maine's first
door canvass on a 3-month trial. We have learned many valuable lessons and
feel it has been a worthwhile investment. In 39 nights of canvassing, David
and the canvassers gained over 100 new members, made contact with nearly
2000 people and raised over $3500 at 3521 doors. The 753 petition signatures
they got will help us to influence our elected representatives in reducing
the militarization of our society. Many of these petition signers have been
contacted by our phone campaign and, wanting to be more closely involved in
building a just society, have become new members.
During those three months 10 canvassers were trained. Each of them benefited
tremendously from their experiences and will be more articulate spokespeople
for peace from now on. This is the way the cycle of activism builds. This
small piece will continue to grow.
Door to door canvassing is a unique tool for getting information about
militarism and the potential of nonviolence to the people. This brief
canvass helped build important name recognition for Peace Action Maine. A
good foundation has been set in place for a possible revival in the spring.

As David has said: "this has been an especially powerful three months to be
out talking to people about peace. The message of peaceful alternatives
needs to be taken to the streets! Peace is the way!" We say "thank you
David!"
