Student Proposal for a National Mobilization for February 14th-18th
by Eleiza Braun
The time has come for the Peace Movement nationwide to converge and voice
its opposition to the current war in Afghanistan. This war is being used as
an excuse to cut social spending and silence the voice of opposition to
government policies. Through the anti-terrorism bill and the USA Patriot
bill, the very basis of individual liberty that this country was founded on
is in jeopardy. It is time to put an end to the indiscriminate killing
abroad that can only result in the loss of civilian lives, and that will not
be any kind of sustainable solution for the problems that our world is
facing.
The Student Peace Action Network (SPAN) and other youth groups propose a
five-day convergence against the war in Afghanistan, against racism and
against the new war on our civil liberties, to be held in Washington DC. Its
purpose will be education, discussion and direct action. We will converge to
say that the entire country is not united for death and destruction. We, as
a movement, are united for peace and justice.
Please join us in calling for a massive gathering for peace. A two-day
summit of the people will call for real education, beyond the headlines of
the corporate media. This summit of teach-ins, workshops, and discussions
will continue throughout the five days. On the last two days of the
convergence, those who choose to can participate in two days of direct
action. Our voices will no longer be ignored; we will not let them be
ignored.
Join us in Washington. Endorse this call and let us all build a movement for
the people's power.
