Starting Housing, Food, Worker and Community Cooperatives in Portland
Adams School 44 Moody Street, Munjoy Hill
Saturday June 14th 6-9pm
Flower Garden Planting 4-6pm
Local Sprouts Cooperative and the Community Building Collaborative are hosting a Community Potluck Dinner and a discussion on Starting Cooperatives on June 14th at the Adams School in Portland.
The evening will start at 4pm with a flower garden planting around the Adams School facilitated by the Winter Cache Project.
At 6pm there will be a community potluck dinner: Local Sprouts Cooperative will provide a base for the meal and community members are encouraged to bring dishes to share.
At 6:45pm, there will be a Discussion on Starting Cooperatives in Portland. After an overview of cooperatives, Al Smith from Bath will talk about cooperative housing and the housing cooperative they started in Bath. Jonah Fertig from the Community Building Collaborative will speak about cooperative community centers. Hanifa Washington from Local Sprouts Cooperative will talk about worker cooperatives, and then representatives from the Portland Food Co-op will talk about their efforts to start a store-front food co-op in Portland. Afterwards there will be breakout discussions where small groups will talk about cooperative housing, cooperative food and cooperative community center.
The goal of the evening is to bring people together to meet one another, to share food, to share knowledge about cooperatives, and connect people who are interested in starting or supporting cooperatives in Portland. Over the past year, the Community Building Collaborative has been promoting the concept of creating cooperative housing and a cooperative community center at the Adams School.
A cooperative is a member-based organization where members (workers, residents, consumers, producers etc.) democratically own and control the business.
Cooperatives cross all forms of businesses—including housing, energy, food, agriculture, transportation and more. Cooperatives provide a sustainable economic alternative that is focused on benefiting and empowering its members and the community.
