Bridges for PeaceThroughout the State of Maine, people are demonstrating for peace on the bridges in their communities each Sunday from noon until 1:00. Names are added each week to the growing network of bridge vigils. Recently Bridges for Peace has begun to reach outside Maine as well. For information or to add a bridge:

The "Bridges for Peace" movement has gained momentum, adding people and bridges each week. From noon until 1pm 50 to 100 people stretch clear across the Kennebec on the bridge from Woolwich to Bath. The signs are all different but bear the same urgent message of support for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Iraq. The response from those driving by has changed dramatically in the past several weeks, horns echoing down the river as they pass, on to the next bridge. Not only do drivers encounter bridge after bridge of protestors, but those who to stand even in small numbers on a bridge in their own community know that they are part of a wider network of bridge vigils being held at the same time. On February 15, "Bridges for Peace" joined the day of Global Protest, and met for two hours on 25 bridges throughout the state. On the Waterville bridge 200 protesters braved the sub-zero temperatures, while large numbers did the same in Bath, Augusta, Saco, Falmouth, Portland, Belfast, Rockland, Lincolnville, Damariscotta, Wiscasset, Topsham, Ellsworth, Clinton, Lewiston, Farmington, Saco, Calais, Farmington and Bangor.
