Three pending free trade agreements threaten the fresh start for fair trade that Americans voted for. The Panama Free Trade Agreement looks likely to come up for a vote first. We must defeat it and begin working for a new model for trade. Senator Snowe is key on the finance committee which oversees trade policy.

This NAFTA-style trade deal was negotiated by Bush and lingers over Congress, threatening the fresh start for fair trade that so many Americans voted for.
This deal would continue to out-source jobs, undermine workers rights, and destroy the environment.
Panama is a tax haven where companies “set up shop” to avoid paying taxes in the U.S.
The same agricultural provisions that hurt Mexican farmers are included in the Panama FTA. If passed, small farmers in Panama would likely be forced off their land, the same thing that happened in Central America after CAFTA passed.

We must defeat the Panama FTA now by convincing Senator Snowe to come out in opposition. Her role on the Senate Finance committee is key. She has been with us in the past, but remains undecided on the Panama FTA. In order to move forward, we must reject the model of the past once and for all. This is our chance!

“My name is _______ and I am from ________. I am calling to ask Senator Snowe to oppose the Panama Free Trade Agreement. It’s time for a new model for trade agreements that benefit Maine workers and don’t harm the environment. Panama is one of the top tax-havens in the world, and we shouldn’t let companies outsource there to avoid paying taxes. It’s not fair for Maine businesses that play by the rules. Let’s move forward with a new agenda for fair trade. Please ask Senator Snowe to publicly oppose the Panama FTA. Thank you.”
