AND FROM THE PEACE AND JUSTICE CENTER OF EASTERN MAINE IN BANGOR:
Dear Friends (please forward widely),
Only a month to go!
By now you have heard that Amy Goodman will be here on September l3th to speak at the Hammond Street Church in Bangor at 3:00 p.m. Her appearance will be presented by WERU following the 1:00 rally at Paul Bunyan Park. People at the rally will be invited to join a “Peace Walk” to the talk. The rally is currently sponsored by the Peace & Justice Center, Veterans for Peace 003 and the Maine People’s Alliance. We hope other organizations will sign on to sponsor as well. If your organization would like to be listed as a co-sponsor, please let us know.
We need your help to get the word out! Can you help with any of the following?
*Put up posters in your community?
*Hand out flyers for an hour or two at the Folk Festival in Bangor August 22-24th?
*Invite members of other organizations to participate?
*Gather signatures for the signature ad to appear in the BDN on September 11th (deadline 9/4)?
*Write a letter to the editor to your local paper inviting participation?
A copy of the poster, which will also be the signature ad, is available to be downloaded at our website http://www.peacectr.org/
So far we have commitments for the rally from local folk singers, Judd Esty-Kendall and Larry and Leslie Latour as well as Cora Rose of COA and Marsha Lyons. Speakers will include Mary Trotochaud, who spent several years in Iraq after the U.S. invasion, Hosain Aghamoosa, a UM student of Iranian descent, Doug Crate, a Bangor Area Social Worker and Katrina Bisheimer, a labor activist. We are also inviting an Iraq Veteran and a member of the clergy.
Ron Greenberg is already working on organizing buses from Hancock County! Thanks, Ron! If you can coordinate a bus or carpooling from your community let us know.
As the media and most people focus on the candidates and the upcoming election, the rally and talk by Amy Goodman will be an important way for us to make sure people’s voices around issues of war and peace are heard loud and clear. Help us build the movement to make it happen!
