MARY-WYNNE ASHFORD, MD

Mary-Wynne Ashford served as President of Canadian Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War from 1988-90, and chaired the World Congress of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) in 1988 in Montreal.   She was Vice President of IPPNW representing North America from 1991-93, and then Co-President of IPPNW for two terms from 1998-2002.  She served on the University of Victoria Board of Governors from 1993-95.  She retired from clinical medicine at the end of 2003 in order to write Enough Blood Shed: 101 Solutions to Violence, Terror, and War, documenting successful non-violent interventions that have prevented or resolved armed conflict.

CATHERINE THOMASSON, MD

Catherine Thomasson currently is national President of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR).  Previously, she served for 5 years as President of PSR/Oregon. Under her leadership PSR/Oregon created a video presentation to educate the public about the greater threats from war than from terrorism, which supported their advocacy of PSR’s alternative approach to security framed as a “Sensible Multilateral American Response to Terrorism”.  She has also been an educator and advocate for solutions to global warming through presentations on “Health Effects of Global Warming” and “The Need for Energy Independence”.  In addition to her work for PSR, she is a practicing internist at the Portland State University Student Health Service.

CAMERON WAKE, PhD

Cameron Wake studies regional climate and environmental change through analysis of ice cores and instrumental records.  He recently co-authored UCS report Climate Change in the US Northeast, as part of the Northeast Climate Impact Assessment.  Currently, he is leading a research program to reconstruct climate change from ice cores recovered from glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Canadian Arctic.  He also leads the INHALE project, investigating the links between air quality and human health in New England, and is involved in the related AIRMAP project, which seeks to improve understanding of New England’s changing climate and air quality.  More about Cameron Wake and his publications.


MICHAEL RENNER

Michael Renner is Senior Researcher at the Worldwatch Institute, where he directs their Global Security Project addressing the interconnections between resources, environment, conflict, and peacemaking.  In 2002, he wrote the Worldwatch report The Anatomy of Resource Wars.  In addition to his duties at Worldwatch, he is also a member of the Global Policy Forum Board, the Hague Appeal for Peace International Advisory Board, and the International Advisory Group of the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research, based in Sweden.  His book, Fighting for Survival: Environmental Decline, Social Conflict, and the New Age of Insecurity, is one of the most frequently-cited sources in the literature on redefining security.
