2004 Presidential Candidate David Cobb to talk about 2008 Campaign and Local Control

Feb 11 2008 - 7:30pm

2008 has just begun and chances are you’re already fed up with the 2008 Presidential Election Campaign. Is there any way to shorten the political campaign season? Many people think it’s ridiculously long! And the costs are going up and up and up! Whatever happened to Campaign Finance Reform?

Former Green Party Presidential hopeful David Cobb has some answers for those questions.

When David Cobb ran for President, he chose Maine’s Pat LaMarche as his running mate. LaMarche would often introduce Cobb on the stump, and will do so again on February 11th at UMaine. During his visit to Maine, Cobb will present an evening of looking back and forward into the murky world of Presidential Politics and the health of a two-party system in a richly diverse country. Cobb’s lecture is set for 7:30pm in Minsky Recital Hall, UMaine, Mon., February 11th. Admission is free. For more information, contact Derek Mitchell, 581-1701.

Cobb will be joined by Shannon Tracey, both staff for Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County, CA http://www.duhc.org and key organizers on the cutting-edge campaign to forbid corporations from making political contributions and preventing them from claiming constitutional rights in Humboldt County, CA.

For those concerned about the increasing power of corporations in their lives and globally, Cobb & Tracey will run an all-day workshop: “Why Do Corporations Have More Rights Than You Do?”

The workshop will give community leaders, policy makers and concerned citizens an awareness of the dangers of excessive corporate power. It will show how that power can be controlled and even weakened to secure local control over local issues.

The workshop will run from 10:30am to 5:30pm on Sunday, February 10th, Coe Lounge, UMaine Memorial Union. Registration will be limited to 25 participants and a suggested donation of $25. A potluck will follow. To register, contact John Greenman at jgreenman [at] gwi [dot] net or 827-7014.

Co-sponsored by UMaine Student Government, UMaine Student Affairs, The Peace Studies Program, Orono Peace Group, the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine.
